Rapid evolution of silver nanoparticle resistance in Escherichia coli

The recent exponential increase in the use of engineered nanoparticles (eNPs) means both greater intentional and unintentional exposure of eNPs to microbes. Intentional use includes the use of eNPs as biocides. Unintentional exposure results from the fact that eNPs are included in a variety of commercial products (paints, sunscreens, cosmetics). Many of these eNPs are composed of heavy metals o...

Fleroxacin resistance in Escherichia coli.

Spontaneous fleroxacin-resistant mutants of Escherichia coli K-12 were isolated at a frequency of 10(-10) to 10(-11) mutants per CFU plated. All mutants exhibited quinolone-resistant replicative DNA biosynthesis, and 4 of 11 mutants also had decreased amounts of OmpF or OmpC porin. None of the mutants had changes solely in porin proteins.

Quinolone resistance in Escherichia coli.

Escherichia coli is an important pathogen of animals and humans that causes great financial cost in food production by causing disease in food animals. The quinolones are a class of synthetic antimicrobial agents with excellent activity against Escherichia coli and other Gram-negative bacteria used in human and veterinary medicine. Different quinolones are used to treat various conditions in an...

Uncoupler resistance in Escherichia coli

possible inhibition of absorption by folic acid as it interfered with the PAB assay. We conclude that PAB passes across human buccal mucosa by a non-saturable, Na+ -independent process presumably physical diffusion. These transport characteristics of PAB are similar to those found with small intestine of rats and hamsters in vitro (Spencer et al., 1966; Arvanitakis, 1978). PAB will be 92% ioniz...

Resistance patterns of Escherichia coli causing urinary tract infection

Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases and Escherichia coli is its common cause. The aim of this study was to assess the resistance patterns of E.coli in urinary tract infections and to determine the susceptibility of E.coli to commonly used antimicrobials and also to evaluate the options for empirical treatment of UTI. Methods: This stud...
